Government Issues

By Bill Maher

Monday was Tax Day. Do you know anyone who did their own taxes?

I don't know anyone who would even think about wading into their taxes without some sort of professional help. And, after the psychiatrist, you might even hire an accountant.

Health Redistribution

By Bill Maher

The politicians who run Arkansas had a problem: They wanted to get their hands on all the free Obamabucks they had coming to them under Obamacare so they could expand health-care coverage to the poor. Which in Arkansas is pretty much everybody. But they just hated that the money would go to Medicaid, which as we all know is a stalking horse for Communism.

The New Batch

By Bill Maher

As Republicans keep looking for a youngish face on which to hastily staple the horrifying shriveled death-head of their moldering policies, the wheel has spun, predictably enough, to Jeb Bush. Jeb, the more deserving one. Jeb, the man who finally put Florida back in red territory. Jeb, the never-handsome Bush, the "smarter" Bush, with several pounds of extra flesh and a little piggy nose and a presence so instantly forgettable that you feel like you've been visited by the perfect, platonic form of "white guy."

Immaculate Misconception

By Bill Maher

Helen M. Alvaré is a law professor at George Mason University. She's also president of the Chiaroscuro Institute, a "nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank that addresses issues of human sexuality, marriage and respect for life." I don't know what "nonpartisan" is doing with those other words, but I don't make the rules.

Public Opinion

By Bill Maher

I think one of the basic, core problems with our politics is the fact that we use buzzwords -- and those buzzwords mean completely different things to different voters. So a politician says a word and, depending on your own ideology -- and if you successfully navigated middle school -- you picture something totally different than what Sean Hannity pictures.

Gunning for the Midterms

By Bill Maher

A Gallup poll taken earlier this month found that regular churchgoers are more likely to own guns than people who spent their Sundays home in bed. It's a small but real gap: 32% to 29%. I assume the poll was commissioned by robbers, who wanted to know the best time to break into homes and not get shot. Turns out it's Sunday morning.

A Little Hate for the Haters

By Bill Maher

Last week we got some evidence that the NRA may be an even bigger bunch of assholes than had been previously suspected. We weren't giving them enough credit.

President Obama revealed in an interview in "New Republic" that he loves guns too! He even shoots them. "In fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."

Prescription For Disaster

By Bill Maher

One of the big problems with the Drug War is that it goes after the wrong drugs. Because of prescription abuse, drug-related overdoses have doubled nationally in the last decade. We should lay off the pot and start curtailing the pharmaceutical companies and doctors peddling the prescription shit.

The Los Angeles Times ran an eye-opening series last month, revealing that prescription drug overdoses kill more people than heroin or cocaine. Over a five-year period in four counties in Southern California, The Times found 3,733 deaths from prescription drugs. Compare that to the number of deaths from OD'ing on marijuana, which was just one guy in the Valley who giggled to death.

298 of those deaths resulted from just 71 doctors; 16 of them were under the care of one guy named Van Vu. Ask your doctor if Dr. Van Vu is right for you. Amazingly, he has a spotless record with the Medical Board of California.

Wouldn't we be a lot better served asking our drug czar to stop worrying about the other drugs and focus instead on cleaning up this problem?
