Armed and Ludicrous

The NRA seems to have a new take on an old stance: "Guns don't kill people. Crazy people kill people." They've gone out of their way to say America doesn't have a gun problem; it has an inadequate mental illness detection and treatment problem. In lieu of universal background checks, the NRA says we just have to do a better job of identifying the criminals and the mentally ill under the current system, which, by the way, allows a full 40% of gun sales to go unchecked through a "private sales" loophole.

RISC with Sebastian Junger

Journalist, author and filmmaker Sebastian Junger and his colleague Tim Hetherington were nominated for an Academy Award in 2011 for their documentary, Restrepo. In April of that year, Hetherington was killed while covering the conflict in Libya and Junger found himself making a film about his fallen friend.

The Vagina Demagogues

Idaho's professional standards commission is investigating a high school teacher named Tim McDaniel for using the word "vagina" in class -- in what's being called "the sexiest algebra lesson ever." No, he's a science teacher who was teaching human reproduction out of the textbook, but parents took exception to him using the v-word instead of the more appropriate pointing to his crotch and whispering, "Down there."
