Republicans didn’t do themselves any favors in their quest to repeal Obamacare by coming up with a replacement plan that is so horrible it probably can’t get through Congress. But, that’s not the only way Republicans can get rid of Obamacare. They can also pull out the supports that make the law function, which will cause it to fail, and then say, “See? We told you it was a disaster.”
That’s why Republicans are always acting as if Obamacare is collapsing. Except it isn’t. According to the CBO, Obamacare, warts and all, is doing what it set out to do and will continue to run well into the future. But it won’t if Republicans get together and force it to fail, while trying to avoid the political costs of forcing it to fail by acting as if it was a fait accompli. But it isn’t.
There’s only one problem: who is going to push back on the Republican message machine that insists Obamacare is already on its way out, a disaster, done, kaput? Where are the Democrats on this? Where are the members of Congress saying, “The idea that Obamacare is collapsing is a lie told by Donald Trump and the Republicans ill-informed and craven enough to follow him.” You don’t hear it. Because they’re pathetic. They relied on Obama to carry the load for them, now they’re relying on the media. They simply have no messenger. They’ve had a decade to publicly defend the law. I don’t expect them to start now.
