California just passed a bill that sets a goal of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045. As Vox’s David Roberts points out, California has been setting aggressive renewable energy goals since 2002, and passing them easily: “Today, most utilities have met their 2020 targets, and many are closing in on their 2030 targets.”
To Republicans who always say climate change legislation has to hurt the economy, one word: California. It’s been passing clean energy bills for decades, has a rapidly growing economy, already the world’s fifth largest, with a six billion dollar budget surplus. The rest of the country could do it, too, they just have to follow our lead: if you want to be carbon-free, first you have to get Republican-free.
