I’ve been a liberal long enough to understand that the economic backbone of this proud nation consists of unionized civil servants who can’t be fired for any reason. But there was a story this month that made me hate our side.
It came out that the janitor who mops up San Francisco’s Powell Street station made $162,050 in overtime in 2015. That’s more than the median base pay for an airline pilot. Just in overtime. In total, he made $271,243 in salary and benefits. I find in difficult to believe that San Francisco couldn’t find anyone with his skill set – mopping – who could do the job for less. I dunno, how about $271,000 flat? How sticky does San Francisco get?
Kamala Harris, our new senator, will make a base salary of $174,000 this year. It’s a funny ol’ state. If she plays her cards right, maybe she can use the senate as a springboard to mopping the subway.
I know – someone’s going to say this is anecdotal, but that’s not the same as saying it’s not true. And another 49 BART janitors earned more than $100,000 in 2015. Just because Donald Trump is lying about draining the swamp, it doesn’t mean there’s no swamp.
