The Supreme Court heard arguments this week on whether to assert gay marriage as a constitutional right. Many legal experts say this is a done deal, and we’ll have something to celebrate this summer. But 18 countries already have same-sex marriage. Super Catholic Ireland is almost sure to become number 19 when they vote on it in a few weeks (polls show it has overwhelming support). On gay rights, we’re leading from behind. Wouldn’t it be nice for America to get out ahead of something for once? Whether it’s gay marriage or universal health care or climate change, we’re stragglers.
